The origins of solar energy in India date back to 1975, when CEL was founded. Prof. Juzer Vasi and Dr. Rajeewa Arya (Visiting Professor at NCPRE) presented a paper entitled, “Commemorating 50 years of Solar PV in India: Achievements and Challenges Ahead” at the 36th International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC-36) held in Bangkok from November 9- 14, 2025. The paper described the developments in solar energy which have taken place in India over the years, but also outlined the challenges which lie ahead. Many lessons learned in India would be relevant to other ASEAN countries.
