The International Technical Commission (IEC) is a global, not- for-profit membership organization, whose work underpins quality infrastructure and international trade in electrical and electronic goods. The IEC brings together ~170 countries and provides a global, neutral and independent standardization and conformity assessment platform. In particular, IEC has a series of standards for Photovoltaic Devices, which are followed the world over. This year, the fourth time ever, India / BIS organized the IEC General Meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi. As a part of the IEC General Meeting, several Technical Committees and associated Working Groups also met in New Delhi from September 15 - 19, 2025. This is the first time in history that India is leading a project associated with the development of a new standard under Technical Committee (TC) 82 whose focus is on ‘Solar Photovoltaic Energy Systems.’ This meeting is where global standards in the area of quality, reliability and performance of solar PV devices are created. Prof. Narendra Shiradkar from NCPRE participated in the IEC TC82 Working Group 2 (WG2) meeting. WG2’s remit includes standards addressing the safety of PV modules, particularly for high voltage grid-connected systems. Prof. Shiradkar presented an update on the new international standard (technical specification) in the area of bypass diodes that he is leading. Important issues regarding the creation of standards associated with emerging technologies such as perovskite / tandem devices, glass / glass modules, universal connectors for solar PV etc. were also discussed in this meeting, to which Prof. Shiradkar contributed.
